Dental Cleanings, Exams, and X-rays
At Colliver Dental Group, we care about your continued oral health and feel that it is our responsibility to offer you as much guidance as we possibly can. Good oral hygiene habits are key in keeping your mouth healthy throughout your life. Many people think that brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is enough – not so! Just as important to your continued oral health is your twice annual visit to our office for a professional cleaning and exam.
Why are regular cleanings and examinations important?As the saying goes, “It’s hardest to know what you don’t know.” In dental this is the key. To you, it may seem like you are doing everything within your power to keep your mouth healthy, but what you don’t know and can’t see is the detail that will come back to bite you.
What happens during a professional dental cleaning?When you come to our office for a professional cleaning you can expect your mouth to get the works. Our goal is to bring your oral health back to square one by removing built up plaque and tartar, polishing teeth, and ensuring that your gums are in tip top condition.
When you are brushing and flossing you might think you are doing a though job but quite often teeth aren’t as easy to reach as you think. Many times when someone who thinks they are doing a great job of keeping their mouth clean comes in for a cleaning, we find pockets and hard-to-reach niches that have been missed. We will let you know how to change your at home routines to ensure that you are paying attention to your whole mouth.
What happens during a dental examination?Once we have thoroughly cleaned you mouth we will begin the examination. A dental examination usually starts out with an X-ray. Using dental X-rays, we are able to see issues that would otherwise be impossible to see due to location (between teeth) or because they are too small to see with the naked eye. Many times we are able to find the beginning stages of cavities, while they are still preventable (with proper oral hygiene), and make you aware of them.
When Dr. Bill Colliver and Dr. Marcie Bidinger examine your mouth they are looking to detect and prevent health issues before they turn into serious problems. Unless you come in for regular exams, issues can begin and run their course. Before you even realize you have an issue it can be too late. When we examine you mouth, we are looking for the following issues:
|•||Visual tooth decay|
|•||Gum pocket depth|
|•||Signs of oral cancer|
|•||Tooth trauma (chipping or cracking)|
If we find any of the above issues we can make recommendations on how to go about treating them or preventing them altogether.
Please call us today at (301) 662-5914 to schedule your twice yearly cleaning and exam. Remember, if you are experiencing tooth sensitivity for a week or more, call us and schedule an appointment to have it looked at as it may be the sign of a more serious issue.
