Teeth Whitening Frederick, MD
Often times our patients will ask us what procedure will make the biggest difference in the beauty of their smile. Our answer is almost always, “teeth whitening. In terms of changing the appearance of your smile for the better, teeth whitening is easy, inexpensive, and can have a very positive impact. The best part about teeth whitening is, in all of it’s forms it is a non-invasive procedure. That is to say, it’s generally quick, easy and comfortable to have your teeth whitened.
How do teeth become off-white in coloration? When teeth are new, they are covered in their full layer of enamel which is white in color. Over time, as they are affected by wear and tear produced by chewing, the enamel will wear down. When enough enamel has been worn off of a tooth the inner core (dentin) of the tooth has a tendency to show through. Dentin is yellowish in color, thus teeth with a low level of enamel left on them can often appear yellowish as the dentin becomes more and more visible.
The color of your teeth can also be heavily affected by the food and drink that you consume. If you are a coffee, tea, or cola drinker there is a good chance your teeth have been stained at least a little by one of those products. Products that can easily stain teeth are usually acidic in nature and dark in coloration. Smoking can have a severe impact, not only on the color of your teeth but on your oral health.
Teeth Whitening Options
Because of the fact that teeth whitening has become the number one cosmetic dental procedure in America, a number of options are available that can help you achieve whiter teeth.
There are plenty of teeth whitening solutions that you can buy at a grocery store, but these generally produce sub-par results. For example, teeth whitening toothpaste can take a very long time to work when compared to options that we provide. Further, whitening toothpastes can be extremely abrasive on teeth which can wear down your enamel, increasing your risk of tooth decay.
At Colliver Dental we offer a teeth whitening procedure known as at-home teeth whitening. For this procedure you will need to visit us two times. During the first visit we will take an impression of your upper and lower jaws that we will use to fabricate two clear plastic trays. These trays will fit over you teeth much like a mouth guard.
Once the trays have been fabricated you will return for the second visit where we will make minor adjustments to them to ensure a proper fit. During this visit we will give you a whitening solution to be place in the trays each time you wear them. Not only does this method of teeth whitening work quickly compared to over-the-counter solutions, it is also much more safe.
