Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygiene Basics

A beautiful woman flossing her way into better Dental Hygiene in Frederick, MDBacteria that live in your mouth is the main culprit of most common dental problems. Plaque, the sticky layer of material that forms on and around your teeth, contains bacteria that feed on sugars and other carbohydrates you consume. Over time, the bacteria produce acids that eat away at your enamel. This leads to cavities and severe tooth decay.

Plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) buildup can also erode your gum tissue. Eventually, you can develop an infection that leads to gingivitis. Gingivitis is classified by gums that are swollen, red, and bleed easily. If gingivitis is left untreated, you can develop periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease.

With proper dental hygiene, you can avoid the trappings of poor oral health. Proper dental hygiene means that your teeth are clean and free of debris, your gums are pink and healthy, and bad breath is not a constant problem.

Daily preventive care is the most effective way to stop problems before they start. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, with an ADA approved toothpaste that contains fluoride. Daily flossing will also help remove food debris from in between the contact spaces of your teeth. Eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks can also aid in preserving your teeth.

Be aware of certain warning signs that indicate poor oral hygiene. If you have persistent bad breath or your gums, bleed easily, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible.

The Importance of Regular Visits

Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are also a vital part of proper dental hygiene. The general rule of thumb for many people is two visits a year. However, scheduling a dental visit depends on the condition of your oral hygiene, your habits, and medical conditions. People who are at high risk of dental diseases include:

•  Pregnant women
•  Diabetics
•  People who have previously experienced dental diseases
•  People with a weak immune response to bacterial infections
•  People who use tobacco products
•  People who are prone to stress

So what happens during a regular checkup at Colliver Dental Group?

•  Professional cleanings. Our dental hygienist will diligently work to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Afterwards, polish will be applied to remove minor stains and improve cosmetics. Even patients who practice daily preventive care should still have regular professional cleanings.
•  Check for tooth decay and gum disease. While we clean your teeth, we may notice the beginning stages of tooth decay or gum disease. If the damage is reversible, we will inform you of pertinent areas and remind you to practice daily care.
•  Head, neck, and lymph node check. During a physical exam, Dr. Bill Colliver will do a quick check of the head, neck, and lymph nodes for any abnormalities. If an abnormality is found, it could be a sign of a major health issue.
•  X-rays and scans. X-rays will help us diagnose any problems that exist below the gumline. 3D scans can also give us a more comprehensive image of minor fractures and decay.
•  Restorative treatment. Decay or gum disease can be treated during a regular visit. If the problem is severe, we may have to address it over several appointments.
