Tooth Loss Ramifications

Many times people will opt to have a tooth that is beyond repair removed because it appears to be the cheapest treatment option available to them at the time. Nothing could be further from the truth. When a tooth is removed from your mouth a few things happen that can drastically alter your oral health in bad ways.

Once a tooth is removed the teeth around the gap will begin to move toward the gap. One those teeth have moved, the teeth next to them are allowed to move a bit as well. The end result can be drastic changes to the way your bite fits together. This can cause jaw pain, fatigue, and tooth chipping.

When a tooth has been removed the bone in the jaw has nothing to stimulate it in that area. Often this results in bone loss. Bone loss in the jaw can result in the loss of other teeth and frequently leads to much more serious dental issues.

So, as you can see, tooth removal can be the cheapest option initially, but the cost to fix the issues that arise due to removal can cost vastly more in the long run. Fortunately, dental implants can fix all of the issues described above and stand in for your natural tooth for many, many years.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are made up of three parts; implant (post), abutment, and crown. The implant itself is a screw made of titanium which we insert into your jawbone. Titanium is biocompatible, which means that your bone will grow into and around it with ease – this is called osseointegreation. Eventually it will be integrated into your jaw as if it were the root of a natural tooth.

After the implant has been placed it will need several months to heal and integrate into your jaw. Once that time has passed we can place the abutment onto the implant. The abutment screws into the implant and acts as a surface for the crown to join with the implant. Directly after we are done placing the abutment we can place the crown.

Crowns are made using measurements we take from your tooth before removing it. The measurements are sent to a lab for fabrication and then sent to us. We affix the crown to the abutment either by gluing it with a permanent adhesive of by using an abutment screw. The end result is a crown that looks and acts just like a real tooth in every way. It does everything from chewing to preventing bone loss.

In addition to acting as a replacement for individual teeth, implants can also act as anchors for other dental fixtures such as bridges and permanent dentures.

Dental Implant Care

Dental implants are a huge asset to your dental health and as such, it behooves you to take good care of them to ensure their long life. Treat them as you would a normal tooth when it comes to your oral hygiene routine – brushing and flossing daily.

Smoking can lead to failure in implants. It is important that if you receive an implant you refrain from smoking on a regular basis if you want the implant to last for a decent amount of time. The complications involved in smoking with implants can be nasty.
