Dental Sealants Frederick, MD

At Colliver Dental Group, we want to give you every benefit that we possibly can when it comes to fighting tooth decay. We are passionate about preventing dental issues and one of the best ways we have found to do that is with dental sealants. Sealants offer our patients the ability to add a layer of protection against decay causing bacteria. We believe that educating our patients on how to best combat tooth decay can make a big difference in their ability to keep their teeth happy and healthy.

How Dental Sealants Work

Dental sealants are made of a plastic film that we paint onto the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Typically, sealants are only applied to the molars as they have large chewing surfaces with intricate depressions and grooves. They act as a shield against even microscopic organisms, like bacteria. They are meant to add an extra layer of protection against the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Brushing and flossing does a fantastic job of removing decay causing bacteria but you only brush and floss twice a day, leaving your teeth vulnerable in the interim.

Sealants are able to offer protection against cavities for many years. It is important that you come in to see us at least twice a year for regular cleanings and exams so that we can ensure your sealants are still in good condition. After several years, they can crack or come off completely, in which case we simply replace or repair them.

Who should get sealants?

Because of the high probability that kids and teenagers will form cavities we recommend that they have sealants placed. Adults who are at high risk of developing cavities can benefit from having sealants as well.

We can place sealants on your child’s teeth as they come in. The period that kids are most susceptible to cavities is between the ages of 6 and 14 years old, so we like to ensure they are thoroughly protected during this time.

In some cases, we recommend that sealants be placed on baby teeth to combat the formation of cavities. Baby teeth play a very important role in the spacing of your adult teeth and how they come in, protecting them from decay can be critical.

How are sealants applied?

The process of applying dental sealants is easy, fast, and painless. It will only take us a few minutes to prepare and complete. The first step is cleaning your teeth thoroughly. We then dry the teeth that will be accepting the sealants. Wet teeth can contain bacteria that can get trapped below the sealant, which defeats their purpose. We will then apply a mildly acidic solution to your teeth to ensure the sealants form a strong bond with your teeth. We rinse and dry them again. Finally, we paint the sealant material onto your teeth and allow it to dry.

If you have any questions or would like to setup and appointment to have sealants placed, please call us today at (301) 662-5914. We look forward to seeing your smile!
