Root Canal Therapy

Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful, but in actuality, most patients feel little pain or discomfort thanks to modern medicine. If you have been experiencing painful problems with a tooth, you may be wondering if you need a root canal. At Colliver Dental Group, we perform root canal therapy to repair and save teeth that are badly decayed or infected.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a natural cavity within the center of the tooth. Inside the cavity, there is a pulpy substance that contains nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels. The pulp is important because it acts as a kind of alarm system for your teeth. The pulp is sensitive to exposure and flaws and signals to your brain when something needs to change. Root canal therapy refers to the process of removing infected pulp from the tooth.

Root canal therapy is typically broken down into two appointments. During the first appointment, we will take an x-ray to determine if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. Next, we will use a local anesthetic to numb the area and eliminate discomfort. Once the area is desensitized, we will place a rubber dental dam around the tooth to keep it dry and clean during treatment.

To access the pulp, we will drill a tiny hole in the top portion of the tooth. Next, the pulp, bacteria, and decayed nerve tissue will be removed from the canal using a small file. We will use water or sodium hypochlorite to periodically flush away debris.

Dental Tools used for Root Canal Therapy in Frederick, MDAfter the canal is completely cleaned and reshaped, we will fill it with a rubber-like substance known as gutta-percha. Gutta-percha improves the structural integrity of an empty tooth, as well as seals it off from future bacteria and infection. Once the gutta-percha is in place, we will fill the access hole with resin composite.

After a tooth loses its pulp, it may become brittle or weak. In most cases, we will place a dental crown at a subsequent appointment to protect the tooth.

Do You Need Root Canal Therapy?

Only Dr. Bill Colliver will be able to determine if root canal therapy is necessary. The most common symptom that indicates the need for root canal therapy is pain. Some patients also experience extended sensitivity to hot liquids or foods. Another symptom includes tender and swollen gums near the tooth. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, we may or may not recommend root canal therapy.

After a Root Canal

For the first few days after your procedure, you may notice some sensitivity issues and tissue inflammation. Most discomfort can be alleviated with the use of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. To avoid future infections, you should improve your oral health care routine. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss at least once. Regular checkups and professional cleanings are also an important part of maintaining pristine oral health.
